bento #18.

I had a bit of time today so I decided to make something cute for myself. This bento consists of carrot-pine nut rice pressed into flower-shaped molds and topped with a thick slice of luncheon meat, which is then steamed, sausage octopuses and random broccoli, pineapple chunks and flower-shaped carrots for intake of vitamins and stuff. I wanted to squeeze in a bottle of salad dressing for the veggies but I couldn't make space for it so I prepared a small dish for the dressing to be dipped in on the side.

I thought making the octopuses was kinda fun. Actually, the fun part was seeing them expand and puff up in the boiling water and their "tentacles" starting to spread out. Unfortunately, once I removed them from the water, they started to shrink. Maybe it's because I used fish sausages.

And I finally got to use my nori puncher! I don't think that's what it's called but you get the idea. I used it to make faces for my luncheon meat. It was quite nerve wracking using it because the section with the mouth didn't want to be stamped cleanly away and I ended up having to tear bits of seaweed to make the mouths. Perhaps if I toast my seaweed before using I could get a clean cut?
